Wavelength (nm) 1995), analysis of sugar related products (Schaffler et al., 1993) and predicting varietal resistance to the stalk borer Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (Rutherford et al., 1993). This paper is a summary of some past and current research in South Africa, as well as indicating potential new applications. Comparison of NIR spectra for a range of products tested are shown in Figure 1, and Table 1 is a summary of the constituents for which successful calibrations have been developed.
